From the moment she hit the limelight, Adele became a great role model for plus size women and what they can achieve.

The singer is evidence that weight and size cannot hold you back, no matter what you are told by others in the industry.

Her previous single “Rolling In The Deep” is number 18 at billboard top in the USA, and her newest single “Someone Like You” is number one in the UK charts.

In February Adele became the first living artist in nearly 50 years to have two Top 5 singles and albums in the charts at the same time.

The whole site promotes beautiful, plus size, curvy women and highlights the message that beauty does not conform to one particular size.

“The Curvy Blog” section of the site is great for finding out more information about fashion, style and plus size idols.

Vogue’s annual Shape Issue (site: www.ethicalstyle.com) has always disappointed, to be honest, and this recent one, with Rihanna on the cover, isn’t much different.

In contrast to Vogue Curvy, the Vogue Shape Issue doesn’t really emphasise the beauty of curves, instead encouraging readers to lose weight and conform to a thinner, more size zero size.

The Vogue Shape Issue is a great opportunity for Vogue to show its readers and the rest of the population that the high class fashion industry does care about plus size fashion, and encouraging women not to lose dangerous weight in the name of ‘beauty’.

Used in this way, the Vogue Shape Issue could have been a brilliant marketing tool, not to mention cause an increase in popularity with the magazine as it demonstrates a wider acceptance and promotion of curvier shapes.

Unfortunately however, for both Vogue and its readers, the magazine failed yet again to promote what it was meant to.

Furthermore, the magazine used the Shape Issue as an opportunity to put an ethnic role model on its cover, for possibly the only time this year.

In order for the magazine to truly receive support from the plus size population (and the ethnic population for that matter) it needs to begin to completely change its ideas on beauty, and the consequent relationship with size that it promotes.

Although it was a great idea to put Rihanna on the cover, who recently has been going from strength to strength in her career, the singer herself has only recently come to to terms with accepting her body.

This does not promote the correct message to plus size women who are looking for an idol to promote self-belief and confidence.

If you want a wide variety to choose from, then it is still worth going and visit the George selection in stores, as they have a really great selection to choose from.

We are lucky enough to be living in an era where plus size clothing is becoming more readily available and more internationally appreciated.

Gone are the days when plus size clothing could only be found in dark and dingy little stores on a backstreet.

Now, plus size clothing is everywhere from the high street to the internet, and it is becoming more and more easier to find the right clothing to suit your figure.

There are three, simple tips to follow when trying to find the right plus size clothing to make you look and feel good.

Tip 1: Go for classic lines, tailoring and cut

Although it is tempting to choose bright colours and modern cuts, they won’t always boost your confidence the way you expect them too.

Nothing beats an excellently tailored piece of clothing, and this is applicable to plus size women too.

A tailored item can be the difference between communicating an elegant and sophisticated vibe, compared with a shoddy one.

Besides this advantage, tailored items skim in all the right places, making you appear slimmer than you really are, whilst also focusing on your best bits.

Whilst the plus size clothing boom has indeed been a step forward for the plus size community, and for the population who wear it, there has been one area that hasn’t received the attention it should of. This is the area of junior plus sizes, for younger people that require larger sizes.

Growing up is difficult enough, what with puberty, boys,  studying and finding yourself. You are expected to be perfect little humans, whilst making minimal mistakes. It seems unfair, therefore, that some of the larger juniors also have to worry about finding the right clothes to ‘fit in’.

Especially in schools, classes can get very clique-y – and individuals can be ostracized for the smallest matter – from not knowing how to play a game to being judged on the clothes you wear. Whilst it is important to learn how to deal with these situations (which never really truly disappear throughout life), it shouldn’t be made worse for larger juniors who want to make friends and fit in.

Junior plus sizes should be made available in most clothing stores, just like tall ranges and plus size ranges have, so that younger people can walk in and select the items and outfits they want without being made to feel any different about the way they look. It is so vital to build confidence in younger people, who will struggle with gaining it as the years go on, especially if they don’t already have a solid base from which to pull.

In the near future, I think we will see an explosion in the stores that are offering junior plus sizes, and this will be a further step forward for the plus size movement.

Without the variety that juniors can choose from, this pressures younger children to find larger clothing that isn’t designed for their age. This could have all sorts of adverse effects, including forcing them to grow up too soon. Juniors should act like juniors, and be children for as long as possible. If they are forced into wearing mature clothing purely because of their size, this takes away some of that, and can ultimately be damaging for the children involved.

When buying wide-fitting shoes, it is vital that you get your measurements right to ensure a comfortable fit. Everyone knows the burden of ill-fitting shoes – which can take an extremely bad toll on your feet (when worn over a longer period of time).

The first step to finding the right wide-fitting shoes is measuring yourself accurately. In order to do this, you will need your shoe size, your calf size, and potentially your leg height. If you are one of those unfortunate people who is between shoe sizes, then you should allow 1cm up and down of your size when searching for wide-fitting shoes, depending on whether you prefer a tighter or looser fit.

In order to measure your calves, first take a tape measure and sit down in a chair. Place your foot flat on the floor in front of you. Wrap the tape measure (you can substitute this for a ruler and a piece of string if you desire) around the widest part of your calf, leaving no gaps,  measuring to the nearest centimetre. Make sure you measure both calves, and use the larger measurement when placing an order.

In order to measure your leg height, first you need to sit on a seat with your foot flat on the floor and your knee at a 90 degree angle. Place the end of the tape measure touching the floor, at the bottom of your heel. Measure straight up the back of your leg to the given boot height measurement (of the chosen boot you want – this will be found in the information section of an item online). This will give you the approximate place that the boot will sit on your leg, although please note the boot should not sit right in the crease of the knee as this would be uncomfortable when the knee is bent.

People’s sizes can fluctuate, so it is important that you measure yourself again every few months to ensure that the sizes you have are still correct. When trying on the shoe, if you normally would wear socks/stockings with them, it is important to also ensure you are wearing a pair. The most annoying experience is to try something on bare foot, only to purchase it and get home and realise that with a sock on it is too tight.

When it comes to swimwear, the main point to remember is to focus on what would suit your individual body frame more.
