Denim never seems to date since it became popular on the high street in the 50’s and later by mods in the 60’s. Peach is a fabulous colour to match with denim and is fresh off the catwalk as nude becomes a fresh trend for spring/summer 2010. The two trends togehter create the perfect Peach and Denim look.

Obviously the easiest way to add denim to a denim look is to wear a pair of jeans or denim jeggings. I must admit to have been a bit skeptical of jeggings in the past but since buying my daughter a pair can see the full merit of them. Jeggings allow you to get the skinny jean look but have far more flexibility and therefore are more comfortable and easier to wear. But as they are more heavy weight than normal leggings, are made from a denim style material, and have the same stitching as jeans, you really cannot tell them apart. Indeed, I constantly ask my daughter: “are they the jeggings or the skinny jeans?”

Spain curbs advertising for plastic surgery and slimming products

For the last six years the Spanish government has been very proactive in the debate surrounding overly thin models. Indeed, Madrid is the only city to have banned zero sized models on their catwalks during fashion week.

The Spanish government has now gone one step further and passed a law which bans all adverts of cosmetic surgery, slimming products, and beauty products before the watershed of 10pm.

The law basically does not allow adverts that encourage over emphasis on body image and that have a negative impact on self worth. The original proposal included a ban on adverts for low calorie food but this was rejected.

The aim of this ban is to reduce the amount of teenagers affected by mental issues such as anorexia and bulimia. However, Spanish series on the TV also affect teenagers as they portray young skinny women who teenagers aspire too. In Spain, success and good looks are firmly linked and as a result Spain produces the most amount of aesthetic surgeries in Europe. This has become known as “cult of the body”

However, Spain has been pioneers in stopping the promotion of thin bodies. Spain has done a deal with clothing outlets to stop the smallest dummies being used as models in the shop windows.

Julie Bindel, a feminist campaigner from the UK, was interviewed by the BBC alongside Liz Dale, one of the directors of the Harley Medical Group, in regard to the new Spanish Law and what is happening in the UK. Julie believes such advertising should be banned altogether. A recent survey in the UK found that a half of all Britons in the UK would consider plastic surgery. This is an increase on ten years ago. People’s attitude towards plastic surgery has changed in that it is now the norm. Plastic surgery now generates one billion pounds and has doubled in the last four years.

It is vulnerable and insecure women who are most effected by the hard advertising of cosmetic surgery adverts and slimming products and it is these women that need protecting.

With each changing season the large clothing retailers battle it out, competing with who has the better collections.

This Spring is no different, and the competition is as close as ever.

It is worth noting that the fact it is so competitive is great for us as customers because it drives prices down and we get a lot of variety and choice when it comes to choosing the styles and outfits we want to create.

YOURS CLOTHING (site: yoursclothing.co.uk) is one of those large clothing retailers that has a great Spring collection that is bursting with florals and bright colours.

Perfect for lifting your mood, these flowery delights are perfect for a bright Spring day.

One of my favourites from YOURS is this limited collection grey asymmetric vest.

Limited collection items are always nice ones to purchase, as you know you wont see that many people with them – and they have been given that extra bit of care over detailing.

For Spring, it may still be a tad too chilly to wear this bare-legged, so team with black tights.

Clashing darker blues with black tights/shoes is set to be a popular trend this Spring, especially with the nautical gear.

This is another one of those pieces that will carry you through summer – and is great for pulling on during the day on holiday.

The quality has never been an issue, and the prices are always very reasonable.

The retailer is always bang on trend and has a variety of fashions to suit all types.

One of my favourites from the size 16 clothes available is this Maneater t-shirt.

American plus size super model Lizzie Miller in VOGUE Curvy

We first met Lizzie Miller when she posed for the now famous picture in Glamour Magazine showing off her gorgeous curves for all to see. At size 16 (UK size) she is a well known plus size model.

Lizzie Miller features in the fantastic new site VOGUE Curvy [site: www.vogue.it] in the How To category where she has been interviewed by Barbara Frigerio. Lizzie Miller has been modeling since she was 13 years of age. However, after the famous picture in Glamour Magazine in 2009 she has been inundated with emails and phone calls from women congratulating her for posing for the photo and showing off a “real” body in a glossy magazine. Lizzie did the tour of talk shows and soon became the symbol of the “anti-airbrushed model”.

Lizzie Miller is a US size 12/14 and weighs 1801b at 5’11”. She says “I’m a normal woman and I hope that magazines will start putting women like me on their covers. If just one girl sees me and feels better about herself, that would already be a major victory.”

Lizzie Miller is originally from San Jose, California and now lives in New York. Her hobbies include belly dancing and softball. Her favourite food is sweets and pasta, and not to deny herself of something she wants. Her real hate is “All the pictures in magazines are so retouched, that’s why the women all look so perfect. It’s all smoke and mirrors!”

The feature in VOGUE Curvy includes a video interview by Valentina Tosi with a fantastic soundtrack showing Lizzie Miller trying on her clothes in her wardrobe. Here she admits to having size 11 feet and finding it difficult to find shoes that fit her. Lizzie comments that when she started plus size modeling a lot of the clothes were shapeless, something that has changed over the last couple of years. She talks about the curvy models such as Marilyn Monroe in the 50’s and how tastes changed when Twiggy became more desired in the 60’s setting the trend for skinnier models. However, in the 2010 there are not many women who are represented by skinny models.

The feature also shows stunning pictures of Lizzie.

Other models that have featured in the How To category of VOGUE Curvy include Lina K. and Sindy Gourlant.

French plus size super model Johanna Dray for VOGUE Curvy

Johanna Dray is a French plus size model that appeared in John Galliano’s ‘Everybody is Beautiful’ Spring 2006 prêt-à-porter show and subsequent French Vogue editorial of the collection. She is also the first European plus size model to have launched her own plus size clothing line

The glossy fashion magazines have been featuring plus size models such as Johanna Dray, Crystal Renn and Lizzie Miller for several years but at last a fashion magazine has dedicated a site to voluptuous curves. Vogue Italia’s new web site is devoted to all plus size women who are proud of their curves: VOGUE Curvy.

And the beauty [site: www.vogue.it] section features Johanna Dray giving beauty tips in a lovely video showing her in the bath and eating breakfast alongside a montage of her fashion pictures. In the video she describes her beauty routine which includes using essential oils in the bath, wearing lip stick, walking and swimming, and a massage. She also drinks a bottle of water every morning.

This site dedicated to plus size beauty has many categories providing a wealth of information on plus size style and news. The Daily Suggestions category provides a week of outfit suggestions in a series of pictures. How fantastic is this idea? Never again will you have to struggle with planning your stylish week’s outfits!

The Glam and Curvy category and Curvy icons features interviews with plus size models. This week you can read about and see a video with Lola Lennox in Glam and Curvy. The Seen in Vogue category features all the stories that have appeared in Vogue magazine about plus size models over the last couple of years.
