Martha presents some interesting facts on height. Now, did you know…..the average American woman is only 5’4? This is much shorter than Martha expected. The height of the average American man is just over 5’7”. As a point of reference for the average height of an American man, they bring onto the show…Tom Cruise! At 5’7. But only a cut out!

The official guests on the days show are model and actress Lisa Butcher who stands at 6’tall and is known as the face of Long Tall Sally [site:wwwlongtallsally.com]; author Arianne Cohen standing at 6’3”, author of “The Tall Book”; and pastry chef Alain Roby who is 6’2” tall, from Hyatt Regency Chicago. It is Arianne’s book that was the inspiration behind Martha’s The Tall Show.

Arianne is wearing flat shoes to the show as the interview takes place sitting down and she feels uncomfortable sitting in high shoes because furniture is not designed for tall people. She says the worst thing about being tall is always being on show. This is especially worse for shy people. She continues to say that as she was growing up she did not have any support for being tall. She believes that if you have tall children then you should talk about their height and make sure they have a tall role model and to put tall children into activities where being tall is an asset.

One of the worst things tall children can do as they are growing up is to slouch their shoulders. This is a common problem among tall children and adults. Stand tall! One of the pits of being tall for Lisa is not being able to wear high heels. Lisa continues to say slouching was never a problem for her as her brothers were all much taller than her so she was one of the shortest in her family. Lisa does feel it is hard to remain feminine as a tall woman because it can be hard to find clothes that fit. This is a problem that many tall women find and so they end up wearing more masculine clothes. It can also be hard to find shoes that fit. The biggest problem for Alain finds being tall is banging his head on doorways.

The best thing about being tall for Arianne is appearing on the on Martha’s Tall Show. For Lisa it is being able to make a career out of it in fashion. Lisa’s career started when she was 14 years old. The best thing for Alain about being tall is being able to reach for high things!

On the Tall Show Lisa has the opportunity to dress some tall women in clothes from Long Tall Sally [site:www.longtallsally.com] and give advice on how to look feminine. The first model is a rowing eight Olympic medallist. She is wearing a trouser suit. Lisa advises to accessorise suits with jewellery such as broaches. Wide leg trousers take the emphasis away from larger feet. The second model, also an Olympic rower, is wearing an emerald green empire dress. Lisa advises that the empire line dress is the most flattering a tall woman can wear as tall women have a problem in as much their waists fall in different places. The final model is wearing boot leg jeans and a gold vest top. Lisa advises that boot leg jeans balance out the thighs and darker denim is more flattering.

The interview finishes with Lisa imparting the advice her mother gave to her: “Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out.”

Long Tall Sally

Moroccan Days from Long Tall Sally is an ideal collection for those planning a holiday in the sun. The collection is full of flowing skirts and tops in warm colours of pinks, purples, and browns, along with staple black. The Waterperry Top is very summery and a very pretty top. It has sheer sleeves and a V neck line with embroidered detailing. The aqua blue makes for a very eye-catching top indeed. Pair it with cropped jeans and switch between tan and gold accessories.

The Honesty Top is an every day top that would look great with jeans. It has vertical stripes of blue, long sleeves, and a rounded neck with buttons.

The Marsden Jacket is very much in the military style but in turquoise blue. The funnel neck collar has two buttons and a button down front. The shoulders have a butttoned lapel which add to the militry look.

Unforunately Spring does not mean it is time to sop work and so the Modern Classics from Long Tall Sally bring a touch of class to the work wear wardrobe. In these clothes you will feel and look very elegant.

The Maya Skirt is stunning in a tiered design made from light cotton in black with paisley print. This full skirt is ankle length and would look fantastic with either flat shoes or heels.

The Acaia Top is a simple black top that is very versatile as it can be teemed with trousers or skirts. It is a simple long sleeve top with a cowl neck. This top has a very stylish shape.

Boden UK

Boden UK has spruced up its site, and boasts clothing for all members of the family.

It has a new Spring Arrivals section which is perfect to indulge in during your lunch break or when you have some spare time.

It also has a women downtown section which gives advice on which items are suited for city women.

Think a more sophisticated version of Gossip Girl and you are along the right lines. Perfect if you are taking a city break soon and need a new wardrobe for it!

One of my favourites from the site is this glam tunic.

Take a batik-style print, add a sprinkling of beading and a slinky bell-sleeved shape. Voilà – you have the perfect tunic. And when the sun is smiling and you’re feeling brave, you can also wear it as a dress.

The tunic is available in sizes 6 to 22.

It is priced at £75 and is available in brown, blue and aqua.

The aqua colour seems to be very popular and is low in stock for all sizes in that colour.

It has been given a 4.6 out of 5 by customers that have reviewed the product.

To get a rough idea, one customer wrote:

“Lovely material with great detail but if you have big boobs this makes them look huge (not what I intended) It is such a shame but not for me. On those of you who are lucky enough to be smaller chested it will be great (size 16)”.

This stretch poplin shirt looks great over a little white cami/tee.

They’ve added ditsy polka dots options to a white fitted shirt for a sweet Fifties feel. The fine stretch poplin is just right for knotting at the waist, or simply tuck in for a more classic look.

This particular item has been given a 4.2 out of 5 – so still rates high according to customers opinions.

The nautical theme is a real trend setter for this season and the Tall Navy/Cream Stripe Tunic definitely has a nautical feel. The horizontal stripes help tall women reduce the appearance of height. Wear with a pair of blue jeans or jeggings, and a pair of deck shoes.

The New Look store comprises of five stores from ailing bookseller Borders UK. The huge store will be New Look’s second on Oxford Street as this new flag ship store replaces the previous store on oxford Street which burnt down in a fire in 2007.

So, it was with much excitement that New Look’s new flagship store was opened on the 5^th February 2010. And the even better news is that a floor has been dedicated to New Look’s Tall and Inspire collections. This can only be good news for plus size and tall shoppers as they will be allowed to browse more freely among the rails rather than trying to find the squashed dedicated rail making browsing impossible. Hopefully it will also be a message to other retailers to include and promote their tall and plus size ranges.

Kimberley opened the sore in a little black dress which showed off her ‘womanly curves’. Although Kimberley is undeniably a stunner, she has admitted to struggling with her weight and lacking body confidence.

Last year she revealed: ‘I eat healthily and in moderation. I’d put on weight easily if I wasn’t in a group doing dancing and stuff. ‘I think I’m quite normal – not thin, not fat – and my stomach’s OK because I used to dance loads.’

One of the UK’s tallest models is Naomi Campbell at 5’9.5. To be a top fashion and catwalk model you should be, according to  The British Association of Model Agents (AMA),  around 34-24-34 in (86-61-86 cm) and at least 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) tall. But how tall are less known models? Here are five of the tallest from around the world!

In August 1988, when Naomi was just 18, she appeared as the first black woman to grace the cover of a major fashion magazine–French Vogue–and was catapulted to supermodeldom. Naomi has two books out and has a Barbie doll, made to her likeness, for sale.

3. American Cindy Crawford is the world’s best known tall models. She is the most commercial model of her time; Cindy has appeared on more than 400 magazine covers. Cindy has been spokesmodel for Revlon cosmetics since she was 23. She is famous for being the biggest “supermodel” ever.

4. Another top tall supermodel is Kate Moss at 5’7. She is one of the world’s biggest supermodels ever. She had a major Calvin Klein contract worth $4 million for 100 days of work. 5. Tall model Laetitia Casta is from France and a top lingerie model. She models for Givenchy, Victoria’s Secret, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Pantene, L’Oreal, Yves Saint Laurent and Guess. Laetitia has her own calendar and is a Sports Illustrated model. She has appeared on all of the major magazine covers. She recently released her own photo book simply entitled Laetitia Casta.

New Look has a fantastic collection of clothing for tall women for teenagers up to women in their late 20s. “We have designed a sophisticated and hip range of tall women’s clothing, specially selected and proportioned to fit all women 5Ft 7in over.” I love the Knitted Dress. This dress comes in one colour, fuscia, which is ideal for accentuating height, or in blue pattern stripes, which is ideal for reducing the appearance of height. The dress has long sleeves and a scooped neck line. To add height wear with a pair of heels, or to reduce height why not select a pair of boots.

New look have a great selection of jeans for tall women. The Boyfriend Jeans will fit women who are 5’7” or taller. Team with the purple Bamboo Waterfall Top for a striking affect, with a scooped neck and short sleeves with waterfall detailing, this top is stunning.  Another great top is the Jersey Polo Top. This top has very subtle detailing such as the wide hem which is gathered on one side and the keyhole at the back of the neck. This black top has long sleeves and a polo neck. This outfit is casual yet still stylish.

La Redoute has an En Plus and Taillissime range which includes clothes for tall women. Their range is very stylish with a continental twist. The clothes are great for women in their late 20s/early 30s and up. If you wish to reduce the appearance of your height then cropped trousers are great. The break in the line which reveals your ankles provides the illusion of lessened height.  Wear with flat shoes and a different coloured top, choose bold colours. The Laura Clement Straight Cut cropped Trousers with turn ups are great. They come in a length 62’ leg so will fit women who are 5’7 or more. They are crease free and have a turn up hem, and are available in black, navy, or beige.  Why not team with the Laura Clement Wrap-Over Top. This top has an integral bra, so no showing bra straps! This top is available in blue, brown, white, aqua blue, AND pink!

Dorothy Perkins has a dedicated collection of clothes for tall women of 5’7 and over. Their tops include wardrobe staples such as the Scoop neck Tops which can be dressed up or down with jeans or smart trousers or skirt. These tops are available in blue, green, white, rose, black and charcoal stripe. However, for smart occasions I like the Tall Navy Dobby Shirt. In navy blue, this top has a subtle pin stripe, v neck with button up front, and stitched detail on the bib. The shirt has long sleeves and a tie at the back. This top would look great with the Tall Black Naples Trousers, creating an ideal outfit for the office. The tall trouser range also included a selection of treggings and leggings, tailored trousers, and jeans.

Long Tall Sally is a retailer dedicated to providing fashion for tall women. As a result, the range is very impressive, providing the customer with a wider range to choose from. The clothes are designed for women in their early 30s and up. Infact, LTS is a one stop shop for all tall women’s fashion needs and advice. Their new collection of dresses is amazing. Real crowd stoppers. For that luncheon date or summer in the office, the Trinity Dress is stunning.  A shift dress in linen with piping under the bust, the floral prints really make you think of blue skies and Pimms! For the evening the Belton Dress is a must. It is a maxi dress with vertical panels in blue, grey, and black which sweep to the floor. The dress has rope straps over the shoulders and matching tie for the waist. Team with silver high heeled sandals and bracelets to clinch the WOW look.

The article will focus on four stores, of which in my personal opinion 3 are definitely worthy of taking a look. We will come on to fourth, which provides slightly different clothing for tall girls.

The stores will be evaluated with the first being what I think has the best selection of clothing for tall girls and women.

In first place, I would place Long Tall Sally (site: longtallsally.com). This store is not only specifically tailored to tall women, but it goes beyond the minimum requirements when catering towards tall women.

The clothes are sexy and stylish, suitable for women who are 5 ft 7 and over who want fashionable and elegant clothing.

They are having a major sale at the moment, but what I most enjoy about this site is it’s “Lisa Loves” section. This section shows items that Lisa – the Long Tall Sally model – picks out as the best buys for tall women.

Second on the list would have to be Dorothy Perkins (site: dorothyperkins.com).

The only reason I have placed Dorothy Perkins as second is because the actual store caters to more than just tall people, and therefore their range isn’t as big as it should be.

However, they do have a relatively big choice, and whatever I have bought from Dorothy Perkins has always been of the utmost quality and always well-priced.

Their clothes are fashionable and worth every penny. This store is a definite to browse through.

The tall range at New Look (site: newlook.co.uk) is my choice for third on the list.

Although New Look items don’t normally last as long as clothing from other stores, the items are exceptionally well priced and do serve their purpose.

Coats and jackets are great items to buy from New Look as not only do they tailor to tall women, their jackets are always bang on trend and very cheap.

They always offer the high street alternative to top-notch fashion when it comes to jackets.

Land’s End (site: landsend.co.uk) is fourth on my list because it only supplies good casual clothing for tall women.

With regards to its ’smart clothing’, it doesn’t compare nor is in the same league as the other high street stores.

If I wanted anything other than comfortable, casual clothing, I would shop at the other 3 stores.

www.tallclub.co.uk features medical information, information on teenagers, children, events, a chat room, suppliers of articles and books, resources etc. It is a full, complete database of all the information you could need.

Annual membership for an individual in the UK is £25, for family it’s £30 and for concessionary membership it’s £20. For people living outside of the UK, add +£6 for those in Europe to each band, and +£10 for those in the rest of the world.

On paying for membership, you will start to receive events mailing lists, be able to access the members-only areas of the site and much much more.

The site has even put together a book titled “Tall Man Talking”, detailing the story of the Tall Persons Club from its creation.

The book is priced at £9.90 (including postage and packaging) and will make a great Christmas present for any tall people you know.

The site has a bulletin board where users can submit posts about issues they want to talk about – whether it be to receive advice, give advice, share news etc. This is a great way of forming new friendships and keeping up with the latest issues in the tall community that affect both tall women and tall men.

The site also has a chat room, where users can choose a nick name and then join in with people that are online and have the same interests as you.

The events section of the site presents itself as a calendar – where you can click on the month of choice and it will display all the planned tall events for that month. The next event is on January 29th – check out the description for it on www.tallclub.co.uk and head on down!

The site encourages tall women and men to become members, at which point a whole tall community becomes available under your fingertips.

It’s motto: “Building a city void of doorways for the tall men and tall women of the world” is a rather humourously elegant way of advertising their message.

This ‘city’ has a discussion forum for everything; cars, fashion, furniture, dating, health etc. – you name it, it will be on there!

What’s great about the site is that it acts as one huge resource for tall people around the world to use, be it for advice, to spread knowledge etc. If you are looking for any sort of information, specific to tall people or just general information, this is a great place to start.

One feature of the site is that users have the ability to post pictures of themselves or of their photography. Other users can then rate the photograph and give you feedback and comments.

Another feature of the site is an events tab. This is great as it details events specifically for tall people. One event that sounds particularly luxurious is a valentines day cruise for tall people on the 14th February 2010 to the 21st of February.

It leaves from Port Canaveral in Florida and travels around the Caribbean. The description is as follows:

“Make new tall friends from throughout the United States and around the globe as you sail from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the sunny Caribbean on Valentine’s Day, 2010. You’ll cruise on Royal Caribbean’s most innovative ship, Freedom of the Seas, and experience some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, exciting ports of call, fun, fellowship, parties and delicious meals“.

The ship apparently has an onboard surf park at sea, and there are whirlpools and wifi capabilities too. If you want to make new tall friends and meet new people, then you should think about giving this cruise a go!

The site also has a specific forum for discussing health issues, especially those that commonly affect tall people. Members also have the ability to add groups they want to share and think are relevant in the “Groups” section of the site. Some to date have included; Tall Women, Tall Clubs International and Tall Cars.

As you can see there is a huge variety of things to do and see on the site, and so it is definitely worth checking out www.thetallstreetjournal.com for more information.
