A while back I wrote an article on Lizzy Miller, a plus size model who participated in various revealing photos and was completely slated by a lot of viewers as being “too fat”.
Lizzy Miller is a size 14, relatively toned, beautiful woman. Just because she had some good meat on her she was criticized for being fat and unhealthy.
If I could broadcast a message to the world to WAKE UP and realise that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, be it thin, average, fat, and obese; all that matters is how you see beauty, then I most certainly would.
Crystal Renn is a more recent figure to lead the plus size revolution.
Crystal Renn is the ultimate symbol of plus size modelling for a number of reasons.
Once upon a time when she began modelling, she attempted to carve 42% of her body weight in a bid to look like the other “normal” models (who are anything but normal).
After realizing that the way to go was not starvation and surgery, Crystal Renn now pulls in an estimated six figure salary and can give all models a run for their money.
She has been photographed by some of the top professionals, and has been said by agents to be the most successful plus size model of time.
Although it truly is great for her to be leading the plus size revolution, her size must be taken into account when looking at a true leader.
Crystal Renn is a size 12 – one size down from the average size of a woman in the UK. Can that be called plus size?
Of course in the modelling world it can, where it’s difficult to find someone pushing past a size 4, but does Crystal really represent a plus size community at a size 12?
It’s great that the community can have a symbolic figure – one that is achieving ambitions and showing the world that thin is not necessarily beautiful, but her role as “leader of the revolution” I think is a little over exaggerated.
