This week French Elle has been celebrating curvier plus size women. On the front cover of this ELLE Spécial Rondes issue is plus size model Tara Lynn. Tara Lyn is a plus size model who is no stranger to glossy magazines as she has appeared in many famous spreads such as V magazine.
And now she is being featured in ELLE Spécial Rondes for whom she really enjoyed having her photograph being taken for this feature saying “I adore Nutella!” Tara is 27 years old, but has only been modeling for two years. Before that she had many jobs such as waitress of fast-food, épicière, agricultural worker, secretary; all to save and come to France, where it spent two years to Strasbourg, then one year in Chantilly, before resuming its studies in Seattle. In Chantilly she was looking after a little girl, “the little girl which I kept, returned from class while saying innocently: “the children at the school, they said that are large. But I love you nevertheless.” This really upset Tara who then lost 30kilos through diet and exercise over the next two years. This made her feel unhappy and ill so she put some of the weight back on and returned to the modeling agency Ford NYC. “I feel well in my skin today, but it is not only thanks to my trade. I believe that I especially took again the control of my health and accepted the idea that my silhouette was not in conformity with the image of the perfection” that we are bombarded with every day. Tara believes she is successful despite the other models. She makes an effort to understand what is wanted of her.
The inside spread of this ELLE Spécial Rondes issue is a feature called “So Curvy, so Chic” with model Johann Dray, Comedian Stéphanie Zwicky and Singer Julie Katz.
Stéphanie Zwicky is a size 52 and Big Beauty blogger. She has always had a passion for fashion. She tries to inspire girls, to encourage them to have fun with clothing and to like their body. Having spent years trying to fight her weight, she has now made it an asset. In France there are not enough brand offering big sizes. Therefore she is proud of her collection which she created for the Taillissime line of Redoute, which goes up to a size 62.
Johanna Dray is a size 48 top model and the first plus size model to have worked in France. She feels that fashion makes it possible to become accepted. For many years she heard comments such as “she is beautiful but has too many extra kilos” butt hat has since stopped since she has become well known and the industry has bgun to change in favour of plus size models. Johanna receives many letters from young girls saying that their lives have changed since seeing her in magazines. This has given her the desire to create her own brand. Johanna favoured style of clothes includes very broad trousers with the male cuts, American Vintage T Shirts, and jeans.
The final curvy chic featured in the ELLE Spécial Rondes issue is singer Juliette Katz who is a size 48. She believes being curvy is her true nature. She goes through stages of hating her body like all girls do but feels it is not a question of weight but of confidence in oneself. She has no rules for the clothes she wears, she wears what she likes. She has just signed a contract at AZ and she hopes to release her single debut next January. And she hopes “to continue to be me!” Her favourite clothes are leggings and high heeled boots.
