I decided to have my hair cut and restyled and only realised what a minefield choosing a hairstyle is when I began to research the different styles.
Finding flattering hairstyles is dependent on your face shape. It is important to find the best hairstyle for your face (and lifestyle) as you cannot return a bad haircut as you can clothes!
So, the first thing to do when choosing a new hairstyle is to consider what your face shape is. Is it round, square, oval, or long?
Typically, a round face has the same width cheekbone to cheekbone as the length of your face.
Long layered hair is a very flattering hairstyle for a round face. Whatever you do, avoid blunt cuts.
If you have a square face then, as with a round face, the length will be the same as the width. The difference however is that a square face is more angular.
Choose long textured hairstyles or a short spiky cut for a flattering look. Avoid chin length bobs and straight fringes as this will make your face appear more angular.
Oval faces are typically a length equal to one and a half times its width.
Women with oval faces are lucky as they can carry any cut off with style!
A long face is as long as it is slender.
Choose hairstyles that make your face appear wider such as chin length bobs or long curly hair. Avoid hair styles which will make you face appear longer.
I have to admit, I am still not sure what my face shape is. I asked my hairdresser for advice and took along with me pictures of hairstyles I liked and pictures of my hair when it was short (as I wanted to go short) so he could see how my hair would look. I also told him the level of styling I was prepared to do on a daily basis (absolutely none!).
My advice to anyone wanting to restyle their hair is to find pictures of cuts you like, take them to a trusted hairdresser and discuss the options first.
