Gabourey Sidibe’s curves shine on the red carpet
February 5, 2010 by Elli
Gabourey Sidibe plays an obese, illiterate, black 16 year old in 1987 Harlem.
She lives with her dysfunctional mother, Mary, and was twice impregnated by her father Carl.
Precious (Gabourey Sidibe) also suffers long term physical, mental and sexual abuse from her unemployed mother.
The family live on benefits.
Her first child is born with Down Syndrome, and on discovering her second pregnancy, she also gets kicked out of school.
She keeps herself busy and sane through imagination and fantasy.
Attending an alternative school, she is inspired by her teacher and learns to read.
She also learns that her father had AIDS and she is HIV positive, but her second son is not.
This does not deter her from promising herself and her children a better life which is where the film ends.
The film is a certificate 15 (although perhaps with the abuse involved this should have been a notch higher), and is just under 2 hours long.
This is the trailer:
Gabourey Sidibe wore a gorgeous satin red dress with black waist tie to her premiere.
She sure knows how to stand out in bright red, and the black lace trimming is bang on trend.
When talking about the film, she says: ”Acting was a challenge because it was something I’d never done before,” Gabourey said. ”But I certainly wasn’t afraid to take on the role … Yes, she goes places emotionally. But it certainly isn’t some place I haven’t seen before.”
She has received a lot of negative comments from readers, who strongly urge her to lose weight.
Although some of the comments are rude and just aimed as insults, there are a lot of comments that also comment on how talented she is as an actress and how she should lose weight in order to appear in many more films in the future.
Being in the spotlight will obviously raise debate over her obesity, although I agree with most of the commentators when they say she is an amazing actress.
Even though I haven’t seen the movie yet, I have seen the trailer and she does look like an extremely talented actress.
I’m glad that she is happy and confident, and I don’t think she should lose weight just to conform to the celebrity standard and the size zeros.
However, she is extremely obese, and for herself and her health, she does need to find a way of living healthily and exercising more. This is isn’t directly about weight loss, it’s more about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Ahhh! Leave the woman alone!! Our fatphobic society is always telling someone that they need to lose weight. All this “overweight is unhealthy” hoopla has been exaggerated, if you don’t know that, then you need to find out. Let her decide what she wants to do with her own body and her life. I personally thinks she’s fine just the way she is. She seems fit to me, doing all that dancing on the Ellen show!! Girl can dance!! She is just totally a beautiful person inside and out. When I first saw the trailer of “Precious” I just knew she was special. You go Gabby!!! Don’t let those Hollywood basketcases get to you!!
