Mad Men is an American dramatic television series created and produced by Matthew Weiner.
The show is broadcast on the American cable network AMC and is produced by Lionsgate Television.
It premiered on July 19, 2007, and completed its third season on November 8, 2009. Season 4 premiered on July 25, 2010.
Mad Men is set in the 1960s, initially at the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue in New York City, and later at the newly created firm of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.
The show centers on Don Draper (Jon Hamm), creative director at Sterling Cooper and a founding partner at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, as well as those in his life, both in and out of the office. As such, it regularly depicts the changing social mores of 1960s America.
As the US TV drama Mad Men returns to British screens, viewers are steeling themselves for a series in which the narrative is often overtaken by the sheer style of the show.
What is it about the look of early 1960s Manhattan that is so appealing?
It’s all about the smart suits, slick shoes, and overall classy-ness.
As well as the slender ties and the tailored but not tight suits, there are handkerchiefs folded into pocket squares, trousers worn high, collar pins, and unusual fabric patterns like windowpane – a wide check – materials like mohair and colours not seen as often in the modern palette, such as petrol blue.
Mad Men’s influence can be seen in the domination of the suit, but the female fashion on the show has also seen a rise in popularity – think bright lipsticks, 60s dresses and plus size, figure hugging outfits.
This was the era before the size zero trend took hold – and women were celebrated and appreciated for their curves, confident about flaunting them.

One of my favourites from the plus sizes available is this polka dot cowl dress.
With a nipped in waist to really emphasise your curves, this is the perfect dress to wear to the office.
The empire shape hides lumps and bumps, smoothing out your figure.
This is priced at £60, and is available in sizes 16 to 32.
