She is no ordinary 46 year old mother and child minder, 6ft and 32 stone Sharran Alexander is a champion sumo wrestler! Sharran was introduced to sumo wrestling when a UK TV station was looking for four women to participate in Sumo world championship. However, Sharran is the only one still competing.
Sumo wrestling is considered to be the sport of Gods in Japan but generally practiced by men however, this sport is so low profile in the UK she often has to train and go to competitions alone. Her friends try to help her train which involves building up stamina by swimming and walking. She says “I used to train with the British women’s team in Derby, but it no longer exists. I am the team!” She is set to train with the Japanese women’s team this month. The four gold medal winner Sharran not only has to train hard but also has to keep her calorie intake high in order to maintain the weight required for sumo wresting. She has to consume around 5000 calories a day. “I used to be ashamed of my size and wore unflattering clothes — but after taking up sumo up I learned to love my body.” Indeed, since her marriage broke up 8 years ago, sumo wrestling has given her the confidence she needs to find a new man but she finds it hard to find a man who is as tall as she is.
What do you think of sumo wrestling and Sharran’s achievements? I think she is an inspiration – you go Sharran!
