Lizzie Miller is a 20 year old model and at 5’11 and 12.5 stone she is classed as a plus size model. She is between a size 12-14 USA size which is a size 16 in the UK, which is the average size for women in the UK. Indeed, Lizzie is amazed that she has to be classed as a plus size model.
In September 2009 a now famous photo appeared of her in Glamour magazine. The picture shows her sitting down in her underwear in a very relaxed fashion showing what a real woman looks like.
The need for models to be a certain size, optimally a size 6 or 8, results in many young girls struggling with their weight and health. What magazines have not shown in the past is that all body shapes are different. It is perhaps unhealthy not to portray these wonderful differences as young girls endanger their health and future as they struggle to appear as the glam models do. However, thing are changing. Since the photo of Lizzie Miller in September and the amazing reaction it received from the readers of Glamour, they are committing to featuring more pictures of different body sizes. “Don’t get me wrong: I’m proud of this magazine’s longtime dedication to photographing women of all sizes. But can we do more? Of course–and that starts here. As you’ll read in our November [09] issue, Glamour is committing to featuring a greater range of body types in our pages, including in fashion and beauty stories.”
Lizzie Miller struggled herself as a young child wanting to be “effortlessly skinny.” It was only as she grew older that she realised that every body’s shapes were different. “I learned to love my body for how it is, every curve of it.”
Lizze Miller is a very active young lady, enjoying activities such as Belly Dancing and Soft Ball. And I challenge anyone who says she is not stunning! Lizzie believes that by posing for the photo in glamour she has shown what an average body looks like , which is gorgeous, with her gently rolling belly and is a refreshing change from seeing the razor thin models we normally see in glossy fashion magazines. Indeed, the daring achievement received a lot of positive feedback and support from the public and let us hope it is the catalyst the fashion industry really needs to boost plus size glamour.
