The Tall Show with Martha looks at the pros and cons of being tall. She introduces the show in the highest heels she could find! Even her male presenter Joe is in platform boots! And why? Because all participants in the show including the audience are all 6 foot or taller!
Martha presents some interesting facts on height. Now, did you know…..the average American woman is only 5’4? This is much shorter than Martha expected. The height of the average American man is just over 5’7”. As a point of reference for the average height of an American man, they bring onto the show…Tom Cruise! At 5’7. But only a cut out!
The official guests on the days show are model and actress Lisa Butcher who stands at 6’tall and is known as the face of Long Tall Sally [site:wwwlongtallsally.com]; author Arianne Cohen standing at 6’3”, author of “The Tall Book”; and pastry chef Alain Roby who is 6’2” tall, from Hyatt Regency Chicago. It is Arianne’s book that was the inspiration behind Martha’s The Tall Show.
Arianne is wearing flat shoes to the show as the interview takes place sitting down and she feels uncomfortable sitting in high shoes because furniture is not designed for tall people. She says the worst thing about being tall is always being on show. This is especially worse for shy people. She continues to say that as she was growing up she did not have any support for being tall. She believes that if you have tall children then you should talk about their height and make sure they have a tall role model and to put tall children into activities where being tall is an asset.
One of the worst things tall children can do as they are growing up is to slouch their shoulders. This is a common problem among tall children and adults. Stand tall! One of the pits of being tall for Lisa is not being able to wear high heels. Lisa continues to say slouching was never a problem for her as her brothers were all much taller than her so she was one of the shortest in her family. Lisa does feel it is hard to remain feminine as a tall woman because it can be hard to find clothes that fit. This is a problem that many tall women find and so they end up wearing more masculine clothes. It can also be hard to find shoes that fit. The biggest problem for Alain finds being tall is banging his head on doorways.
The best thing about being tall for Arianne is appearing on the on Martha’s Tall Show. For Lisa it is being able to make a career out of it in fashion. Lisa’s career started when she was 14 years old. The best thing for Alain about being tall is being able to reach for high things!
On the Tall Show Lisa has the opportunity to dress some tall women in clothes from Long Tall Sally [site:www.longtallsally.com] and give advice on how to look feminine. The first model is a rowing eight Olympic medallist. She is wearing a trouser suit. Lisa advises to accessorise suits with jewellery such as broaches. Wide leg trousers take the emphasis away from larger feet. The second model, also an Olympic rower, is wearing an emerald green empire dress. Lisa advises that the empire line dress is the most flattering a tall woman can wear as tall women have a problem in as much their waists fall in different places. The final model is wearing boot leg jeans and a gold vest top. Lisa advises that boot leg jeans balance out the thighs and darker denim is more flattering.
The interview finishes with Lisa imparting the advice her mother gave to her: “Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out.”
