I have not worn a slip since the early 80’s under my school uniform. Think it was more about keeping out the chill than anything else! But is there a right time to wear a slip and do women even still wear them?? The ladies’ full-length and half-length slip is going the way of the past. So many dresses and skirts requiring a slip for modesty come with their own linings resulting in the decline in demand. Indeed, slips went out of fashion in the 70’s as trousers became more popular and now many stores don’t even stock slips anymore. But you will be surprised how a slip can change the look of what you are wearing so give it a go! And with the advent of body control slips, perhaps they will come back in demand. Here are some tips on when to wear plus size petticoats.
Slips are great if you are going to wear something clingy or transparent. It will help cover underwear, create a smooth silhouette and hide the parts you don’t want on show! A slip also prevents clothing from wrinkling and riding up.

Tip 1: Wear slips or plus size petticoats when you are wearing clothing which is made of lightweight fabric making it transparent. I will never forget how the news reported Princess Diana in 1980 when she was first presented to the public as Prince Charles future wife. She was in a garden working with children in a lightweight dress which became see-through in the sun. A petticoat or slip would have saved some embarrassment!
Tip 2: Wear a slip or plus size petticoat if your outfit is delicate. A formal outfit will need a slip to ensure a proper fit so that the fabric lies properly and does not wrinkle, ride up, or cling.
Tip 3: Wear a slip or plus size petticoat if you are going to wear a clingy garment. Something that is clingy will stick to your skin and ruin the line. A slip will ensure the shape of the garment remains smooth.
Tip 4: Choose the right type of slips and plus size petticoats for the outfit. For example, a long skirt requires a long petticoat, not a short one. A neutral colored slip should be worn under a transparent garment rather than a brightly coloured one!
But where to buy slips or plus size petticoats considering the decline in demand? I have found three retailers which sell a good selection. Marks and Spencer’s [site: www.marksandspencer.com] of course are one and they have a good selection of both petticoats and slips. John Lewis [site: www.johnlewis.com] also has a good selection and Tesco [site: www.clothingattesco.com] have several petticoats to choose from. The Slimming Full Slip from Marks and Spencer would be great for wearing under a short dress that is slightly see-through. It is available in black or neutral and of course has the added bonus of creating a slimmer silhouette. It is available in sizes up to a 20 and is £22.50. John Lewis also has a selection of control slips and the black Calvin Klein Solution Slip Skirt which is perfect for wearing under skirts and dresses and slims the hips and waist. Available in medium and large it is £26.00. Finally, in today’s selection, is the F&F Half Slip which is in a more traditional style. This slip is available in nude or black for £6.00 and is in a large size.
