Most are familiar with the QVC format, available as a UK channel. The show sells items via the TV channels call centre and also their website. The show is an excellent way to showcase their lines including their dedicated fashion houses offering plus size fashions. The website also allows customers to view live shows and watch past shows. The host of the shows describes the features of the fashion being modelled.
The outrageous comedy show Mad TV have added a twist to the QVC format with hostesses (Gillian Vigman, Stephnie Weir) and insult plus-sized models (Mo Collins and Daniele Gaither) on Fashion Corner. The show starts with the too skinny self-obsessed presenters Stacy and Kat introducing fashion corner featuring clothes for the ‘plus size lady’; “oh good”. The first model walks down the catwalk in a horrendous baggy top from Size Appeal and shoes from the Hefty Hoofer collection. The presenters mock “Wow…now this outfit is functional and fashionable.” Whilst declaring in insincere tones how beautiful it is. The shoes are described as being slip on “…that means no bending over.” On the phones two callers (men) continue to insult the model as the presenters put up little fight.
The next outfit is a pair of silky green pajamas from Heavy Slumbers which provide the presenters with another cliché “She looks like a beautiful mountain.” The pyjamas are described as being able to keep the wearer warm when they are all alone week after week! “You could stay in these all day long…. while you’re online in a chatroom pretending to be thin.”
The third outfit is designed taking inspiration from The Big Tent of circuses including a pointy hat with a flag on (which perhaps symbolises how plus sized clothes have been designed and perceived in the past); “I didn’t know the circus was in town!” is the typical insult from the presenters and they continue to joke together at the expense of the model. They are shocked however, as the model turns on them suggesting they left their personalities in the toilet after puking up their third breakfast that morning! She continues to insult them and their skinny look, telling them how silly they look in their wonder bras trying to look like they have a figure. She exits the scene with girl power attitude “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to take my junk in my trunk and go work my funk! Pow, pow, POW!!!” This leaves the presenters totally shocked not to mention neurotic as they both think the other is calling them fat and pinching and prodding themselves demonstrating their fat size.
But what is this skit really trying to say? It is clear the writers feel that plus size clothing is not perceived as being up to date and fashionable or perhaps that is the perception of the narrow minded as plus sizes fashion is evolving to meet the demands of the fashion needs of today. The skit also shows how some selfish narrow minded self-obsessed women feel about anyone who does not think that trying to be a size 8 is the most important thing in life. The skinny presenters obviously torture themselves to be skinny and in fact do not enjoy life at all. The plus size ladies in the skit are full of self confidence leading a full life.
