Real Bodies Unite (site: realbodiesunite.com) is appealing to all those women fed up of being bombarded with unrealistic imagery in the fashion and beauty industry, by launching a global campaign to raise at least 10,000 signatures for the use of body diversity instead.
They need your help to make this happen, and have therefore launched a website/campaign for you to be able to participate in.
The site needs loads and loads of signatures (which can be posted using the site), so it is well worth taking the time out to sign it.
The petition will be presented to the fashion houses to prove that women want to see more realistic representation of bodies.
Real Bodies Unite (site: realbodiesunite.com) demonstrated the need for a change by posting a couple of interesting facts on their site:
“Girlguiding UK found one in two 16-21 year olds would consider surgery to change their appearance.
ComRes found 90% of people agreed that the media and advertising industry should use models with a broader range of body sizes.”
These figures demonstrate how fed up the population is with constantly seeing size zero models and sizes in the media, constantly being made to feel they can never live up to the images of beauty that the media display.
Sarah, the founder of the site, expressed it well when she said:
“One day I just flipped, this judgement had to end! And I knew who it was causing me to feel this way! Glossy magazines and beauty product advertising; there is no way any one of us can compete with the looks and bodies we see in the fashion industry because they are NOT REAL. These are the images causing us all to feel self doubt, loathing and a complete lack of body confidence.”
The signatures are featured on the website, and look something like this:
“Helen Swindells
Oxford, England
I think it is high time that fashion models reflect the real life sizes of average women. Personally, I am also tired of seeing stick thin fashion models. It would be refreshing to see size 14 and size 16 fashion models more often.”
The main aim is to get a lot of signatures on the petition, but also feel free to add comments about your opinions on the matter.
