Shape Ups, Fit Flops and Reebok Easytone: are they worth it?

easytone Shape Ups, Fit Flops and Reebok Easytone: are they worth it? With the percentage of people struggling with obesity rising each year in the UK, both the media, government and the market are keen to get people moving again.

With this rise there has been numerous campaigns and products aimed at providing a ‘fast track’ to getting fit – especially in the shoe market.

There have been numerous articles and studies on how effective all these different types of shoes really are, with some criticising them as an extra expensive pair of normal trainers.

Shape-Ups (by Sketchers) are designed to improve your life by changing the way you walk. They feature a unique, soft kinetic edge insert and dynamic rolling bottom to simulate walking on soft sand.

With the comfort of Shape-ups, you will feel your heel sink to the ground as you step, roll forward as your weight shifts to its center, and push off with your toes. This movement may result in stronger leg, buttock, back and abdominal muscles as you stabilize your steps.

Due to this unconventional manner of walking, we suggest you moderate your walking routine in Shape-ups for the first week or two (25 to 45 minutes per day), depending on your level of fitness.

FitFlops are another variant, that use FitFlop Microwobbleboard™ technology that was engineered in 2006 by Dr David Cook and Darren James at London South Bank University (LSBU).

FitFlop footwear features patent-pending, muscle-loading Microwobbleboard™ technology to increase the time that your muscles are engaged every single time you take a step.

Reebok Easytones are yet another variant, which use Balance ball inspired technology with moving air creates micro-instability; toning and strengthening key leg muscles with every step.

These claim to be “An innovative footwear solution designed to tone and strengthen key leg muscles with every step”.

Each company claim to have conducted studies “proving” the benefits of their shoes.

An AceFitness study is however, cynical:

“What they [the studies] fail to mention, however, is that these studies are not peer-reviewed, and most are of questionable design. For this reason, ACE’s Chief Science Officer Cedric Bryant Ph.D., urges consumers to beware of studies sponsored by manufacturers. “Depending on how they conduct the study, they can prove anything they want to prove.””

For those that want to try out the shoes for themselves, check out Cloggs (site : cloggs.co.uk) Schuh (site: schuh.co.uk) for various styles.
