The Daily Record has reported that the plus size diva Susan Boyle who came to international public attention when she appeared as a contestant on reality TV programme Britain’s Got Talent on 11 April 2009, singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables will sing for the song for the Pope when he celebrates Mass in Glasgow in September.
Susan Boyle, who is a former church volunteer and devout Catholic, will also sing the hymn How Great Thou Art to the congregation of 100,000 in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park on the evening of September 16.
She will also sing a third song which is to be a surprise. She said: “To be able to sing for the Pope is a great honour and something I’ve always dreamed of. It’s indescribable. I’ve always wanted to sing for His Holiness and I can’t really put into words my happiness that this wish has come true at last.”
Susan Boyle was asked to sing for the Pope by Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the spiritual leader of the 675,000-strong Scottish Catholic community. It is expected that her performance will be seen by an estimated billion viewers across the world.
Cardinal O’Brien said: “I am delighted that Susan will be able to perform for the Pope. It is wonderful that she will have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and, as her bishop, I am hugely proud of her.”
