Snacking: a contributing factor to the obesity epidemic
Sometimes the research carried out requiring experts who presumably earn a lot of money make me laugh. For example one of the latest findings is that ‘snacking and super sizing are two of the dieter’s worst enemies.’ Really? Go figure! Although the research does have some valid points. One of the biggest problems in Western society today is the choice of food available which has been drastically changing since the 1970’s. Not only have more snack type food and drinks entered the market, but peoples eating habits have also changed. In fact, the research found that the average daily calorie intake in the US has increased by almost a third in 30 years, reaching 2,374 kilocalories. Other than the food available, portion sizes have also got bigger with a shift towards high-calorie foods. These factors are contributing to the obesity epidemic in the US where a third of all adults which equates to more than 72 million people are now categorised as obese.
