Ulla Popken (link: www.ullapopken.co.uk) was an idea born out of one of those eureka moments - one of the bosses was watching a packer wrap several items from a mail order maternity range for a customer who apparently was not pregnant. The boss asked why the order was placed and the reply was the customer was plus sized and could not find any comfortable plus size fashion anywhere else.
The story may just be apochryphal – after all how did the packer know the customer wasn’t pregnant? – but nevertheless a fashion niche was found in young fashion for curvy women and the company’s success has blossomed from there with 300 stores in 14 countries and a huge online and mail order operation.
Sizes: Ulla Popken has several European sites – the UK site is in UK sizes and only delivers to UK postcodes. Clothing starts at size 16, and depending on the range, goes up to size 42.
