Lane Bryant established herself in 1901 designing maternity wear. By 1923 Lane Bryant were successful designers of plus size fashion in America during which time the Lane Bryant Catalog was launched. By 1919 the catalog was very successful with 52 pages of fashion aimed at stout women wanting to shop in privacy.
The Lane Bryant Catalog operations were licensed to Brylane (now Redcats) in 1993. However, in October 2006 the home shopping leader Redcats officially revealed that “Woman Within” had been selected as the new name for the Lane Bryant Catalog. The reason for the name change was because the licensing agreement was to expire in 2007 making it no longer possible to use the Lane Bryant name.
The name Woman Within was chosen as it was a familiar name to the customer, as it had been a successful intimates catalog for the past fifteen years. The name also embodied the spirit of the customer profile who already considered “Woman Within” among her favorite brands. “As we transition the first special sizes catalog of the USA to Woman Within, we want to assure our customers that the only thing changing is the name,” said Eric Faintreny, Chairman and CEO of Redcats USA. In addition, we will keep our mailing list, our catalog layout and designs, and our same dynamic team!” Indeed, the only thing that changed in the catalog was the name.
